Women's Soccer Defeats Oral Roberts, 3-2

Michaela Cody's game-winner propels Leathernecks to first Summit League victory of the season

TULSA, Okla. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team earned its first Summit League victory of the season on Sunday, October 11, against Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With the win, the Leathernecks move to 2-9 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-7-2 (1-2 SL).

"It was high time for a win. We almost doubled our output of goals for the year with today's performance," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "I have a lot of time and respect for Roger Bush, their head coach, and I thought their team was quite talented. We are really pumped about the win as we scored the type of goals that are born from hard work. Brianna has been in form and beat their defenders to the spot for the first goal. Daniela finished clinically for the second, which was fitting because she had a very good game. I am delighted for Michaela as she not only scored her first career goal, but it was the game winner, that's mythical stuff right there. Defensively, I thought we were good and the midfield brought industry and energy to the match."

The Leathernecks struck first in the 23rd minute. Following an Oral Roberts foul, Daniela Salinas set up and booted the ball into the box to Brianna Hughes, who netted her second goal of the season from five yards out to give Western the 1-0 advantage.

Oral Roberts responded with the equalizer in the 37th minute behind the foot of Caitlyn Hanslovan to tie the match at 1-1.

With seconds left in the first half, Skyler Jessop ripped the ball right on target but ORU's keeper Maddie Rhodes was there to make the stop. After 45 minutes of play, the teams would head into halftime tied up at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the day in the 49th minute following a free kick from Ashley Martin who fed the ball to Kayla Keller who scored off a header to take the 2-1 lead. Keller tried to grab one more goal in the 53rd minute, but her shot was saved by Victoria Kappel.

Western's offensive attack heated back up in the 55th minute when Michaela Cody took a shot on goal that was saved by Rhyliegh Bohnenstiehl, who handled the netminding duties for ORU the rest of the second half.

The Leathernecks connected less than a minute later when Tyra Markey punched the ball inside the box to Salinas who scored from eight yards out to tie the match up at 2-2.

It was a battle for the lead for the remainder of the second half as ORU attempted to respond less than three minutes later, but Kappel made the grab to tally her third save of the afternoon. Two minutes later, Salinas put a shot target that was ultimately saved by Bohnenstiehl.

The next 15 minutes drew a total of five fouls and a yellow card for each team as the two sides battled for the crucial Summit League win.

Western prevailed in the 77th minute when Cody scored her first career goal off a deflection in the box and the Leathernecks took the lead, 3-2.

The battle wasn't over yet, as Oral Roberts took a few more attempts to push the match into overtime, but they were unable to take advantage of any opportunities.

Salinas put her third shot on a goal, a header, in the 88th minute but Bohnenstiehl came up with the save. After one more attempt from ORU as time ran out, the Leathernecks came away with the 3-2 advantage.

"We've been knocking on the door of a win for a while and we've finally turned the doorknob," added Flogaites. "Goals change matches, there is no way around that, and today we've dealt admirably with our biggest weakness which has been scoring goals."

The Purple and Gold will hit the road again next week for another league matchup against Omaha on October 16 at 7 p.m.
