Women's Soccer Drops Match to Omaha

Daniela Salinas scores second goal of the season in loss

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team took on the Omaha Mavericks in a Summit League matchup on Friday, October 16, in Omaha, Nebraska. Daniela Salinas' early first-half goal was not enough as the Leathernecks fell to Omaha by a score of 3-1. With the loss, Western falls to 2-10-0 on the season and 1-2 in league play, while the Mavericks move to 5-8-2 (2-3 SL).

"I thought early on we outplayed them big time. I thought as the match progressed their desire really showed and they clearly wanted the match, perhaps more than we did," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "I thought Kayla Kirkwood played the best match of her career and Daniela Salinas gave us everything we could have asked from her. Skyler Jessop and Gina Scaffidi were quality in the air"

"It's hard to know what we are missing right now as we do a lot of things really well. Their three goals were all in 17 minutes. It's a tough conference, The Summit League does not get its due. I stand firmly behind our players in saying that they care and the result bothers them immensely, and that I feel they are a credit to the jersey."

Western jumped out to an early lead in the 9th minute when Daniela Salinas took a shot from the edge of the box and found the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead.

Following shots from Skyler Jessop and Gina Scaffidi that went wide, Madeline Edwards put a shot right on target, but Omaha's keeper was there to make the stop.

Omaha's first attempt to get on the board came in the 39th minute when Hannah Wampler put a shot on goal, but couldn't get the ball past Victoria Kappel who made three saves on the evening. After 45 minutes of play, the Leathernecks headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The first part of the second-half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get any clean looks until the 70th minute when Omaha hit the equalizer to tie the match 1-1. Five minutes later, the Mavs took a 2-1 lead when Chelsi Rohloff found the back of the net.

Rohloff would shoot again in the 77th and 83rd minutes, but Kappel was there to make both stops. In the 87th minute, Rohloff's persistence paid off as she hit a shot that went over Kappel and into the right corner.

"The third goal was academic as we were chasing the match down 2-1 and had no option but to go for it," added Flogaites. "You have to credit Rohloff for her hard running and desire, she is a good player. We were caught too high for the second goal and paid the price for it."

The Leathernecks made one final push as time ran out. Following a corner kick from Scaffidi, Jessop hit a shot that ultimately went high and the Mavericks took the match by a score of 3-1.

The Purple and Gold will look to rebound on Sunday, October 18, as they take on Summit League foe IUPUI in Macomb at 1 p.m.

"Our opportunties are running out and we will have to win Sunday and be forceful and unbashed about winning being our aim," Flogaites said. "We are looking to win Sunday and hopefully get hot. We don't have any other choice, it's do or die time."
