Women's Soccer Falls to IUPUI

Jessop scores third goal of the season in the defeat

Box Score MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team fell to IUPUI on October 18, in a Summit League matchup in Macomb, Illinois. Skyler Jessop got the Leathernecks on the board in the 21st minute, but Western was not able to hold off the Jaguars as it fell by a score of 3-1. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 1-3 in league action (2-11 overall). The Jaguars pick up their first league win, and move to 6-6-2 overall.

"I'm disgusted with the loss. We've given away two leads in two matches and have given away six second-half goals. We have no excuses, we do it to ourselves. We always have loads of shots with no production
," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "And at this stage, we've given away the match, we've given up three points, and we may have squandered our chance to get into the conference tournament. Who do we look at but ourselves?"

A corner kick from Madeline Edwards in the 21st minute landed inside the box to the foot of Jessop, who flicked it in for her third goal of the season, giving the Leathernecks an early 1-0 lead.

IUPUI attempted to answer two minutes later as Kappel made her second save of the afternoon. Catherine Raster of IUPUI put a shot on target in the 31st minute, but Kappel was there to make another stop.

The Leathernecks were unable to get any more clean looks for the remainder of the half and would head into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Jaguars hit the equalizer in the 50th minute as Krissy Kirkhoff took a clean shot into the left corner of the net from six yards out to knot the game up at one goal apiece. Twelve minutes later, Kirkhoff scored again and the Jaguars took a 2-1 lead.

The Leathernecks had chances to score in the remainder of the second half, as Daniela Salinas, Caitlin Rerucha, and Jessop all put shots on goal, but none of them were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.

In the 79th minute, IUPUI's Maryna Clark found the ball off a reflection and moved it down field to score, and the Jaguars would take the match by a score of 3-1.

"We came out over-confident (in the second-half), got burned for it, and conceded a goal in the opening five minutes. We got punished and we deserve to get punished," added Flogaites. "The problem is we don't punish other teams when we get the chance to, we don't have that killer instinct."

Western will be back in action on Friday, October 23, as they take on the Denver Pioneers in a Summit League road match. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m CST.
