Marshall Wins Hammer Throw on Day 1 of Summit League Championships

FARGO, N.D. - Senior Nathaniel Marshall picked up a conference title in the hammer throw to lead Western Illinois track & field on the opening day of the Summit League Championships at Ellig Sports Complex on Thursday (May 15).

Marshall threw a career-long 202-03 to win the event with a mark that ranks tied for second in program history and will qualify him for the NCAA West Regional at the University of Arkansas in two weeks.

"Nathaniel really did a great job today," head coach David Beauchem said. "He had been struggling the last two meets, but he and Coach Lippert stuck to their training and weight lifting plan, and today he hit his throws and is the Summit League Champion."

In the heptathlon, Megan McGlone sits in fourth place through the first four events, Her performances Thursday include a time of 15.03 in the 100-meter hurdles, a high jump mark of 4-11.75, a toss of 35-03.75 in the shot put and time of 26.77 in the 200-meter dash.

Sheila Grant-Shaffer picked up a pair of points for Western with a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw, tossing 160-09.

The men are currently in a tie for fourth place, while the women sit in sixth.
