McGlone Sets Pentathlon Record, Leads Western at EIU Early Bird Invitational

Senior runner, Megan McGlone won four of five pentathlon events on the way to setting a new Western Illinois record.

Team/Individual RESULTS

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Western Illinois track and field senior Megan McGlone started off the 2014-15 indoor track and field season in record-setting fashion at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invitational as she won four out of five pentathlon events on her way to a first-place finish. McGlone's 3,446 points are not only a personal best for the Streamwood, Illinois native, but also breaks the Western Illinois record for the event that she set last season at the Summit League Championships.

"Yesterday was a good opportunity to watch the team in action.  We saw some very good things, and any time you can get a school record, you know you are on the right track," said head coach Michael Stevenson. "We had several personal-best marks to add to that as well,  but we also identified a lot if areas that we need some serious improvement.  Our first priority is to get our entire team healthy and functional.  We took a very limited group to EIU and the results certainly reflected it."

Other top performers for the Leatherneck women included a second place finish from Phyllis George in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 58.65 seconds. Jasmine Brown also scored for the Purple and Gold with her second place finish in the triple jump, leaping 11.92 meters.

On the men's side, Tyler Younkin and Jason Fry led Western with a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 meter dash and shot put respectively. Younkin finished in a time of 22.62 seconds, while Fry threw a distance of 14.63 meters.

Head coach Michael Stevenson and the Fighting Leathernecks' next action is slated for Saturday, January 17 at The Illini Classic in Champaign, Illinois.
