Two Leathernecks Win Singles Flight Titles at Art Peterson


MACOMB, Ill. - Two Western Illinois Leathernecks captured their respective singles flight championship on Friday (Sept. 6) afternoon at the Art Peterson Invitational. Three other Leathernecks turned in a runner-up finish during the singles portion of the Invitational.

Of the seven flights, five Leathernecks advanced to the championship match in their respective flight. Sophomores Mitch Granger and Max Cederkall pulled out titles in the number three and four singles, respectively.

Cederkall opened the day witha  6-3, 6-3 win then was a 6-0, 6-3 winner in the semifinals. Playing the final match of the day at the Brophy Courts, The sophomore again won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4.

Granger was a 6-2, 6-1 winner in the opener, then won a tie-breaker in the semifinals over Matt Bisbee from Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.  Then battling cramps the final couple of games, Granger fought through and won a 6-3, 6-4 match in the finals.

Number one singles Christoph Haertel took a straight set decision (6-1, 6-4) in the opener, then won a tie-breaker at 6-0, 3-6, 10-4. He dropped a 4-6, 2-6 decision in the championship.

Senior Ben Yue also won his first two matches in singles play in straight sets, but dropped the final 0-6, 3-6.

In the number seven singles flight, Brett Furmanski captured his first two victories but fell in the finale.

Doubles play begins Saturday morning (Sept. 7) at 9 a.m. at the Brophy Courts.
