FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Western Illinois men's tennis picked up two singles wins and one doubles victory but were ultimately defeated by Summit League foe South Dakota State 5-2 on Monday (March 26). The Leathernecks now carry an overall record of 2-10 and 0-2 in league play.
Highlighting the action was sophomore Ben Yue who played to a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory over his opponent Dominic Rossetto at No. 2 singles to maintain a perfect Summit League record of 2-0. The win brings his individual record to 6-6.
Junior Patrick Hammers earned his first win at No. 1 singles in conference play and fourth of the season defeating Justin Pyle 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. His individual record now stands at 4-8 on the year.
In No. 6 singles play, senior Daniel Sweeney battled hard against his opponent Christian Maki before falling in the final set taking the 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 loss. Senior Jim Capalbo was shut out in the opening set of No. 3 singles play but fought back in the second before dropping his match 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Andrew Yopp at No. 5 singles and senior Jesus Roman at No. 6 singles were defeated 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
In doubles play, No. 2 tandem of Capalbo and Yopp played to their third doubles win of the season and first in league play defeating the Jackrabbits 8-5. No. 1 doubles duo of Hammers and Yue and No. 3 doubles pair of Roman and Sweeney dropped close matches 8-5 and 8-4, respectively.
The Leathernecks are back on the court for home opening play against Summit League member Oral Roberts Friday (March 30). The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Brophy Courts. The home stand continues on Sunday (April 1) with match play against Chicago State. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
