FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Western Illinois men's tennis wrapped up their Spring Break road stint with a 7-0 loss to Northern Arizona on Saturday (March 17) afternoon. The match brings their record to 2-8 in the 2012 season.
Several Leathernecks played in tight matches but the No. 1 doubles pair of Patrick Hammers and Ben Yue were the only ones to secure a victory for Western Illinois by a score of 9-8 (7-5).
At No. 2 singles, Yue posted a strong effort but could not come away with the win ultimately falling 6-4, 6-3. Hammers at No. 1 singles started strong in set one dropping 6-4 and fell in the second set 6-1 taking the loss. In No. 3 singles play, Jim Capalbo recorded four points in the first set but fell in the end 6-4, 6-0.
Andrew Yopp at No. 4 singles, Daniel Sweeney at No. 5 singles and Justin Liss at No. 6 singles were each held to one point by their opponents.
No. 2 doubles team of Jim Capalbo and Andrew Yopp and No. 3 doubles duo of Justin Liss and Daniel Sweeney dropped their matches 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.
Northern Arizona moves 4-8 on the year following the matchup.
Western Illinois returns to competition for Summit League opening play in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Leathernecks take on IPFW at 8 a.m. on Sunday (March 25) and South Dakota State at 9 a.m. on Monday (March 26).
