MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois swimming and diving took on the Hawkeyes
of Iowa on Friday (Feb. 3) in dual meet competition. The men fell
123-86 and the women met the same fate 256-146.
The Leathernecks tallied 33 event personal best performances, and sophomore diver Doug Ogilvie led the charge with top finishes in the One-Meter and Three-Meter Diving.
Earning runner-up event finishes for the men included Sam Vissers in 50 Free, Tyler Neaveill in 100 Free, Jack Killheffer in 50 Back, Jeremy Grogg in 500 Free and Pawel Wierzchowiec in 50 Breast.
The 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay teams each took second as well.
In women's competition, Jamie Grau recorded second place finishes in 100 IM and 50 Breast competition. Haley Brasile also earned two runner-up finishes in 50 Free and 50 Fly. Also recording second place finishes were Julia Rassmussen in 100 Free, Shawn Fitzpatrick in 50 Back and Mary Betsworth in 500 Free.
The 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay teams each earned runner-up finishes, with the latter posting a new season best time.
"We went up against a
very superior program in size, speed, and depth," head coach Greg Naumann said. "As for our team's
performance, we were a little up and down. We had some solid relay
splits on all of our relays, and our women sprinters also swam some
in-season best times. Doug was able to dominate both boards. We are
showing signs of getting our speed back from all of the hard work and
stress we've placed on the swimmers and diver's bodies. I expect to see
some even quicker times as we go against Valparaiso, Augustana, and
Monmouth."
The Leathernecks return to action in the final regular season meet of the season on Saturday (Feb. 4) against Augustana, Monmouth and Valparaiso.
