MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois swimming and diving fell in the final home meet of the season Saturday (Jan. 28). Milwaukee men remained undefeated in regular season dual competition taking the dual meet 130-92 and the women shut down the Leathernecks 132-64.
Despite defeat, the Fighting Leathernecks recorded 23 season top times and reset one Western Illinois Brophy Pool record.
Freshman Doug Ogilvie continues to dominate the diving arena earning first place finishes in One-Meter and Three-Meter competition. His Three-Meter score of 354.53 qualifies him for NCAA Zones, is a season personal record and a new Summit League top score. The score also surpasses former Leatherneck diver Eric Campbell's Brophy Pool record of 345.05 set in 2006.
In 100 Fly competition, freshmen Jacob Shain and Chris Allen took second and third, respectively. Senior Jack Killheffer earned a runner-up spot in 100 Free, while freshman Pawel Wierzchowiec took third earning a season personal record.
Also setting a season personal record and turning in a runner-up finish was sophomore Jonathan Bond in 100 Back. In 500 Free competition, freshman Jeremy Grogg and senior Braydon Rudy each earned season best times and took second and third place, respectively.
Junior Josh Davis placed second in 100 Breast, while Wierzchowiec took third. Both earned season personal bests for their performances.
Freshman diver Patrick Oliver also earned season top scores for runner-up finishes in One-Meter and Three-Meter diving.
Also earning third place finishes for the Leathernecks were freshman Jeremy Grogg in 1000 Free and Killheffer in 50 Free.
In women's competition, sophomore Julia Rassmussen contributed several strong performances. She took home the individual title in One-Meter diving for her season personal record of 227.55 and was runner-up in 100 Free competition. Also in 100 Free, senior Amanda Hurd took third.
Senior Shawn Fitzpatrick earned two runner-up finishes in the final home meet of her Leatherneck career, one coming in the 200 Free and the other in 100 Back. Fellow senior Jamie Grau also nabbed a second place finish in 100 Breast comptition.
Sophomore Haley Brasile chalked up runner-up and third place finishes in 100 Fly and 50 Free, respectively. In 500 Free, freshman Taylor Miller took second.
Also taking third place in their respective events were freshman Mary Betsworth in 1000 Free, senior Jessica Schnaiter in 100 Fly and junior Allison Calewarts in 100 Back.
"The standout performer was Doug Ogilvie scoring 354.53 on Three-Meter, getting the pool record, and make an even bigger statement qualifying for NCAA Zones in March," head coach Greg Naumann said. "Other solid swims came from Josh Davis, Julia Rassmussen, Haley Brasile, Jonathan Bond, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Jeremy Grogg and both 200 Free Relay teams. Our relays finished out the afternoon with some of the fastest splits that they have seen all season long."
The Leathernecks are back in action next weekend when the team travels to Iowa City, Iowa, for a dual meet against the Hawkeyes on Saturday, Feb. 4. It is followed by a quad competition against Monmouth, Valparaiso and Augustana on Sunday, Feb. 5. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Monmouth.
