Leatherneck Swimming and Diving Falls in East-West Summit League Dual

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois won the battle between the East and the West on Saturday (January 14) defeating the Western Illinois men 123.5-73.5 and women 127-63, respectively.

Despite the loss, the Leathernecks took home four event titles and set a total of 13 season personal records.

Freshman Tyler Neaveill led the way for the men tallying a first place finish in 50 Free and 100 Free competition. His 100 Free time of 48.78 marked a season and a collegiate career best.

In 100 Back competition, sophomore Jonathan Bond and freshman Jacob Shain took second and fourth respectively, both setting season personal records.

Freshman Jeremy Grogg (500 Free) and junior Josh Davis (100 Breast) both set season personal bests for their runner-up event performances. Also taking second place were the 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay teams.

On the women's side, senior Shawn Fitzpatrick swam her way to a break out performance taking home the individual title in the 1,000 Free. She finished more than 30 seconds before runner-up Nikki Peck of Eastern Illinois.

Fitzpatrick was also able to contribute a runner-up finish in 100 Back competition to help the Leatherneck effort.

Sophomore Julia Rassmussen earned the top spot on the podium for her 100 Free performance recording a season personal best time of 55.65.

Also tallying runner-up finishes were freshman Mary Betsworth in 200 Free and 500 Free competition and senior Jamie Grau in 100 Breast. The 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay teams recorded season personal bests for their second place finishes as well.

The Fighting Leathernecks are back in the water at home when they take on the Pheonix of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Thursday, January 19. The dual meet is followed by a trip to IUPUI on Friday, January 20 for the IUPUI Quad.
