Leatherneck Volleyball Captures Two Wins Saturday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Western Illinois volleyball team captured a pair of wins over SIU-Edwardsville and Indiana State Saturday at the Drury Inn/ASICS Challenge.

A win over Savannah State Sunday (10 a.m. CST) will make it two tournament titles in two weeks for Western Illinois. Fans can watch live stats and follow wiuathletics on Twitter for match updates.

The victories push the Fighting Leathernecks' overall record to 5-2 and the last time Western Illinois was 5-2 to start a season was the 1993 campaign.

Saturday was a historic day for head coach Kym McKay, who now owns 101 career victories at Western Illinois. McKay becomes just the second coach at Western Illinois and the sixth coach in the history of The Summit League to reach the 100 career win milestone.

Western Illinois dropped the first set but tightened the defense to capture a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16) over in-state rival SIU-Edwardsville Saturday morning.

Western Illinois allowed SIUE (2-4) to hit .400 in the first set but held the Cougars to a .023 attack percentage (33k-30e-127ta) over the final three sets. Meanwhile, the Fighting Leathernecks hit over .200 in three of the four sets and held a 7-3 advantage in total team blocks.  

Senior Megan Toczek heated up late and finished the match with a team-high 11 kills on 25 attempts (.320 attack percentage). Toczek did not start the match and had only three kills through two sets. However, she put down eight kills on 16 swings over the final two sets to pace the Fighting Leatherneck offense.

Fellow senior middle hitter Cait Egan had 10 kills on a team-high 37 attempts and also collected 4.0 blocks. Egan also had one solo block and moves into a tie with Laura Olsen (1998-92) for fifth all-time in program history with 69 solo blocks. Junior middle hitter Katie Hosteng was efficient as she put down eight kills on 17 swings (.412 attack percentage).

Sophomore setter Sarah Fetter recorded 35 assists for her sixth 30-plus assist performance of the season. Fetter also put down four kills on nine attempts and collected three blocks.

Junior libero Bridget Murphy compiled a team-high 24 digs for her third 20-plus dig performance of the season. Meanwhile freshman outside hitter Ann Miller had nine kills and 13 digs to push her double-digit dig streak to six contests.

Freshman Molly Murphy continues to baffle opponents with her serve as she picked up another three aces. Senior left side Brooke Stittleburg contributed five kills, seven digs and two service aces.

Western Illinois used a deep and balanced offensive attack to sweep host Indiana State (25-17, 25-20, 28-26) Saturday night in front of 347 fans at the ISU Arena.

The Fighting Leathernecks convincingly won the first two sets before a long battle with the Sycamores (4-2) in the third set. Western Illinois eventually prevailed in the final frame, which featured 14 ties and six lead changes.

Western Illinois was efficient offensively as the Fighting Leathernecks hit .252 as a team and committed only 11 hitting errors. Meanwhile, Indiana State was held to a .195 attack percentage and committed 20 hitting errors.

Senior middle hitter Cait Egan, who owns 853 career kills, had a team-high 12 kills on 30 attempts for a .367 attack percentage. Meanwhile junior middle hitter Katie Hosteng, who leads the squad with 77 kills this season, recorded 10 kills on 20 attempts for a match-high .450 attack percentage.

Sophomore setter Sarah Fetter distributed the ball around to five different targets and finished the match with 35 assists. Fetter, who also put down two kills, has recorded seven consecutive 30-plus assist efforts.

Junior libero Bridget Murphy continued her stellar defensive play with a team-high 18 digs. Murphy, who is averaging 5.56 digs per set, also recorded her sixth service ace this season in the decisive third set.

Freshman Ann Miller and senior Brooke Stittleburg also contributed to the defensive effort. Miller, who put down nine kills, compiled 10 digs and has been in double-digits in every match this season. Meanwhile, Stittleburg had 12 digs for her third double-digit performance of the 2011 campaign.
