Hawkeyes' First Half Too Much for Purple & Gold

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Fighting Leathernecks (1-1) spent Friday night under the lights of the Iowa Soccer Complex. The third all-time meeting went Iowa's way as a big first half lead to a 6-1 victory. Iowa has won all three meetings in the series.

"The problem was that we gave up two goals in the first 13 minutes and that put us down early and in a bad situation," said head coach Tony Guinn.

Iowa (3-0) took an early lead with a goal in the fourth minute (3:54) by Leah DeMoss.

Another goal from DeMoss in the 14th minute (13:16) put the Purple & Gold in an early hole. This second one came off an Iowa corner kick and DeMoss was able to settle the ball and find the back of the net.

A third goal from Iowa in the 32nd minute (31:56) distanced the gap as Lacasse collected the goal.

Two late first half goals from Ashley Catrell and Gabrielle Ainsworth stretched the Hawkeye lead to 5-0.

The home team controlled the first half in nearly every statistical category and out shot the Leathernecks 17-2 and collected six corners compared Western's zero.

The second half started more favorably for the Leathernecks as Amy Bennett fired one off the crossbar and Sarah Hall was able to settle the rebound and find Katie Condon who deposited it in the back of the net.

Western began to play more of their style in the second half and collected five early shots to Iowa's zero.

The first shot of the second half for Iowa was a goal and extended the Hawkeyes' lead to 6-1.

"I was glad to see we played a better second half and never gave up," continued Guinn.

"We have played two very different teams this season and the difference in skill sets was apparent and we were not quite ready for this fitness and skill level of Iowa."

Freshman goalkeeper Victoria Kappel collected seven saves in her second career start.

Iowa used 25 shots to Western's nine and seven corners to secure the victory.

Western Illinois will play back in Macomb in front of its home fans on Sunday at 1 p.m. against St. Ambrose at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Coach Guinn is excited for his team to play at home, especially for the newcomers.

"It will be exciting to play on our home field, sleep in our own beds and not have to travel. It is a nice chance for the families to come to Macomb for the first time. It will be an exciting day for everyone involved."

Several Macomb Special Olympic athletes will be the guests of Western Illinois women's soccer on Sunday. The team had visited the athletes at Digger's Bowling Alley earlier this week.

"Hopefully, it will be a special day for them and one they remember. We are excited to host them," finished Guinn.
