AMSTERDAM – Western Illinois defender Oskar Gasecki has signed a three-year contract to join Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund for the upcoming season.
Borussia Dortmund, a club located in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, offered Gasecki a contract after team officials walked away impressed with the 20-year old's ability during a trial over spring break.
Gasecki spent two seasons at Western Illinois where he helped lead the Fighting Leathernecks to a Summit League Tournament championship as a freshman in 2009.
"Oskar has a great opportunity in front of him," said Western Illinois head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Dortmand just won the
Bundesliga on Sunday and they are a first class professional club.
"He
has the mentality it takes to make it as a pro. He loves to train, is
super competitive, has a great first touch, is two footed and can play
several positions."
The Gurnee, Ill., native was named as a Second Team All-Summit League selection as a freshman and also earned a spot on the league's All-Newcomer team the same year.
Gasecki was named to the league's All-Tournament team after scoring the game-winning goal against UMKC in the 2009 Summit League Championship match.
During his two-year stint with the Leathernecks, Gasecki appeared in 34 matches and started 33 of them while netting nine points on four goals and one assist during his career.
"I am very excited for him and look forward to tracking his progress," said Johnson. "It's a bittersweet situation because he will be missed next fall here in
Macomb."
A Polish citizen born in South Africa, Gasecki also played club soccer for the Chicago Fire Juniors as a high-school player and was a two-time All-North Suburban Conference selection.
Gasecki joins former Western Illinois defenders Nikola Katic and Kosuke Kimura as the third player to sign a professional contract during Johnson's tenure.
