Western Illinois Men’s Soccer Earns Multiple OVC Honors

Macomb. IL. – Western Illinois University men's soccer wrapped up a strong 2025 campaign with multiple Leathernecks earning postseason recognition from the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).

Senior midfielder Nathan Bessinger was named to both the All-OVC Second Team and the All-OVC Newcomer Team, capping off an outstanding season anchoring the midfield for the Leathernecks. Bessinger started all 20 games this year, logging the second-most minutes on the team behind senior goalkeeper Micah Ramirez.

A key defensive presence, Bessinger played a crucial role in organizing WIU's backline, helping the team record three shutouts during the season. His leadership and consistency were instrumental in guiding the Leathernecks to an OVC Tournament berth. Bessinger was also named OVC Player of the Week after helping Western Illinois defeat and shut out the conference's top-ranked team Lindenwood University. A victory that secured the Leathernecks' tournament position.

Senior forward Liam Gainey also earned All-OVC Second Team honors for his outstanding offensive contributions. Starting in 16 games, Gainey led Western Illinois with seven goals, ranking fourth in the OVC. He finished tied for third in the conference with 19 shots on goal and tallied two game-winning goals during the campaign.

The 2025 season marks continued growth for Western Illinois men's soccer as the program builds momentum in the competitive OVC landscape.
