MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Men's Tennis team will open Summit League play this weekend when it plays host to a trio of league opponents.
The Fighting Leathernecks (4-11, 0-0) open league play against IPFW on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before squaring off against Centenary at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The weekend cluster finishes with a match against South Dakota State at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Western Illinois is coming off a 4-3 loss to Bradley in a non-league match on Wednesday. The Leathernecks are 2-4 over their last six matches after snapping a seven-match losing streak on March 14.
Last season, Western Illinois finished fourth in The Summit League and qualified for the league tournament after posting a 9-15 overall record and a 3-3 record in league play.
Jeff Cote, the reigning Summit League "Newcomer of the Year", leads Western Illinois with 12 combined wins in doubles and singles play this season. The Leathernecks return six players from last year's squad including three seniors.
IPFW (7-8, 0-0) finished in fifth place in the league a year ago while Centenary (2-3, 0-0) finished seventh. South Dakota State (7-7, 0-2) is the only one of the four squads to have played a league match this year. The Jackrabbits finished in a tie with IPFW for fifth in 2010.
The matches are slated to be played at the Brophy Courts on the campus of Western Illinois but may be moved to Galesburg in the case of inclement weather.
