Western Illinois heads to Bradley on Wednesday

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Men's Tennis team will take to the court again when it travels to in-state rival Bradley for a non-league match at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23.

The Fighting Leathernecks (4-10) snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 win over SIUE in the home opener this past Sunday in Galesburg.

Western Illinois played three matches in Orlando, Fla., last week as part of its Spring Break trip. The Leathernecks were victorious over Quinnipiac (4-3) on March 14 before falling to Youngstown State and Boston on March 15.

Western also played at Illinois State last Saturday (March 19) and lost by a score of 4-1. Jim Capalbo led the squad with a 2-1 record in singles play last week while the doubles team of Patrick Hammers and Ben Yue were 2-0 on the week. Hammers also teamed up with Francisco Ortiz for a doubles win against Youngstown State.

The Braves (10-5) are 3-2 in their past five matches and picked up a 5-2 victory over Prairie View A&M on March 17. Bradley will face Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. on Wednesday before playing the Leathernecks.

Bradley's top player is Justin Abrams with a record of 18-9 while its top doubles team of Abrams/Hamish Weerasinghe is 8-2. The Braves won six-straight matches from Feb. 6-25 before a 7-0 loss at Marquette on Feb. 26.

Western Illinois will begin Summit League play when it plays hosts to IPFW, Centenary and South Dakota State beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and continuing on Saturday.
