Western Illinois Swimming and Diving Falls in Dual Meet

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois swimming and diving swam away with three top finishes and eight runner up finishes, but fell overall to the Bulldogs of Truman State in the home dual meet Saturday, October 8 by scores of 143-71 (men) and 135-76 (women).

"The meet went pretty well," head coach Greg Naumann said. "Truman State was a strong team, but they didn't have as many members as St. Louis last night. We had a strong start with the women winning the 400 medley relay and our sprinting did incredibly well. We were able to get some solid top three finishes. Jacob Shain had a solid 200 fly swim as well. The men's and women's 400 free relays had very close finishes that made for an exciting finish to the meet."

Highlights for the women included a top finish in the 200-yard breaststroke by a margin of over eight seconds by senior Jamie Grau, a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke by fellow senior Shawn Fitzpatrick and freshman Mary Betsworth's second place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle. The 400-yard medley relay of Fitzpatrick, Grau, freshmen Taylor Miller and sophomore Julia Rasmussen also delivered a winning performance.

On the men's side, junior Josh Davis turned in a first place performance by nearly six seconds in the 200-yard backstroke and a second place finish in the 400-yard IM. Junior Jack Killheffer and freshmen Jacob Shain and Tyler Neaveill all earned second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard fly and 100-yard freestyle respectively. The 400-yard freestyle relay of freshman Christopher Allen, Killheffer, Neaveill and Shain came in a close second as well.

The Fighting Leathernecks return to competition on Friday, October 28 against North Dakota and South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. and on Saturday, October 29 in a dual meet against South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.
