MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois (7-11, 1-7) women's soccer fell to Oakland (7-10-1, 5-2-1) on Friday afternoon at home by a score of 3-0. With the win Oakland joins North Dakota State and South Dakota State in The Summit League Tournament, which begins on Nov. 4 in Rochester, Mich.
A foul in the box charged to the Leathernecks allowed Alyssa Fulton to take a penalty kick, which she converted to give the Golden Grizzlies the 1-0 lead in the 8th minute.
At the break, Oakland held onto the shot advantage 8-6 and had two corners to Western's zero.
The Purple & Gold's best chance to find the back of the net was a shot from Katie Condon that forced the Oakland goalkeeper, Anne Berschbach (6-5-1) to make a diving save.
Meghan Reynolds scored the first of two late goals from Oakland as Abigail Haelewyn was credited with the assist. Reynolds was able to dribble past Western's goalkeeper, Victoria Kappel (7-10), on the fast break and found the back of the empty net.
Reynolds also collected the third and final goal for the visitors as Erin ring and Kara Weber teamed up to find her in front of the net at 10 yards.
Oakland outshot the Leathernecks 20-13 while Western was charged with 16 fouls to Oakland's 10.
Kappel finished with two saves while Berschbach finished with four saves on the afternoon.
The season concludes for the Leathernecks on Sunday with Senior Day against IPFW at noon. Lauren DeWolf, Kristin Kuhar, Laura Lins and Nora Potempa will all be honored prior to the start of the match.
