Leathernecks fall victim to hot-shooting Golden Grizzlies

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Western Illinois fell victim to a hot-shooting Oakland team in a 64-38 Summit League loss at the Athletics Center O'Rena on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Oakland (10-6, 4-1 Summit) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before the Fighting Leathernecks (4-10, 2-2) got on the board on Brittany Demery's jumper from the right side of the lane at the 16:59 mark.

Western Illinois would pull to within four points (8-4) on Jackie Barton's jumper with 14:17 remaining in the first half, but the offense would go cold, failing to score for over five minutes as Oakland began to pull ahead.

Both teams would struggle with turnovers early before the Golden Grizzlies settled in and Sharise Calhoun hit a three-pointer at the  10:54 mark to give Oakland a 14-4 lead.

Erica Lewis' bucket at 8:56 would end the scoring drought and cut Oakland's lead to 12 points (18-6) before Bethany Watterworth's three-pointer would push the lead to 21-6 with just under nine minutes.

Oakland's offense would cool off slightly late in the first frame, but the Leathernecks were never able to get within more than 14 points as the Golden Grizzlies took a 32-16 lead into the locker room.

Both teams would trade points to begin the second half before Oakland scored 11 points in a row to stretch the lead to 45-18.

Jackie Barton's jumper at the 14:09 mark snapped a four-minute scoreless drought for the Leathernecks and made the score 45-20.

The Golden Grizzlies, however, would continue to shoot well from the floor en route to their third victory in their past four league contests.

The loss by Western Illinois snapped a two-game winning streak in Summit League play after consecutive wins over Centenary and IUPUI.

Demery led the Leathernecks in scoring for the second game in as many games with eight points while snagging a team-high five rebounds.

Sadie Webb and Valencia Kelly each netted seven points while Christina Jones tied a career-high with five.

Watterworth led all scorers with 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Brittany Carnago chipped in with 12 while Zakiya Minifee grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Leathernecks shot just 28.8 percent (15-for-52) from the floor including 6-for-17 from beyond the arc. Oakland shot 46.9 percent (23-for-49) from the floor, including 82.7 percent (14-for-17) from the charity stripe.

Western Illinois will conclude its two game road swing with a match up against IPFW on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central time.
