MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois played host to in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon and fell to the Panthers. The EIU men were victorious 185-62 and the women lost 174-70.
"It was a tough meet for the team since we are coming off the largest amount of work that we have done all season, said head coach Greg Naumann. Eastern is a week out of their winter training and starting to recover a little bit more. As for stand out swims for the meet, Allison Calewarts swam a strong meet from top to bottom for her events. Jeff Davis had a solid 1,000-yard and a strong 500-yard swim. Jamie Grau, Paige Wolfe, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Brandon Wilkinson and Josh Davis all had good second place finish swims. We are just working hard and keeping things moving towards conference in February.
Calwarts led the women with three strong results. She finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.62. Then, she won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.52. The sophomore wrapped up her day with a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay where she teamed up with Wolfe, Deborah Storm and Brianna Eizenga.
Davis was strong the men as he won the 1,000-yard freestyle event in 10:25.23. He also took home a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with his time of 4:57.10. The senior from Schaumburg, Ill. joined forces with Mike Regan, Brandon Wilkinson and Phil Kurz in the 200-yard freestyle medley relay to finish third. Davis concluded his day with the 200-yard freestyle relay with a split of 22.80.
The Fighting Leathernecks will travel to Green Bay, Wis. to take on the Phoenix on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m.
