Leathernecks host in-state rival in women's soccer

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team will return to action against in-state rival Eastern Illinois on Sunday at noon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

The Fighting Leathernecks (3-3-2) are coming off a 1-0 victory over Green Bay on Thursday. Jordan Spaciel scored the first game-winning goal of her career against the Phoenix. The win extended Western's home-unbeaten streak to five matches dating back to last October.

The Panthers (3-4-1) enter the weekend after dropping four of their past five matches. Eastern Illinois will face Miami University today (Friday) before making the trip to Macomb. The Panthers picked up a 1-0 overtime victory when the teams met in 2009.

A Familiar Face
The Leathernecks will welcome a familiar face back to Macomb this weekend. Eastern Illinois head coach Summer Perala was a goalkeeper for the Leathernecks from 1998-2001. Perala is still the team record holder in career shutouts (10) and saves (570). She is tied for the career record with 18 wins, ranks second in shutouts (5) and holds four of the top-five spots on the single-match save list.

Leathernecks Look to Continue Success
After early struggles against Eastern Illinois, the Leathernecks have turned things around against the Panthers. Eastern began the series between the two schools with victories in seven of the first eight meetings. Since that time, the Leathernecks have picked up victories in three of five matchups, compiling a record of 3-1-1 since 2005.

Spaciel Makes a Difference
Western Illinois freshman Jordan Spaciel has made an immediate impact in her first season as a Leatherneck. The Waterford, Wis., native is currently ranked second on the team with five points and is tied for the team lead with two goals. Her game-winner against Green Bay on Thursday is the fifth game-winning goal scored by a Leatherneck freshman since the start of the 2009 season.
