MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois women's soccer battled for 90 minutes Sunday afternoon but fell 1-0 to Green Bay at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
After a scoreless opening half, Green Bay broke through in the 52nd minute when Ava Nielsen found the back of the net off assists from Claire Paschke and Jessica Howard.
The Leathernecks created opportunities throughout the opening half, recording three shots before the break. Simone Thorst registered two attempts, including a shot in the 27th minute that was saved by Green Bay goalkeeper Anna Scott.
On the other end, Mahee-Lee Caron kept the Phoenix off the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes, making four saves. Caron continued to keep Western Illinois within striking distance throughout the second half, finishing the match with 12 saves.
Following Thursday's 5-0 setback, Western Illinois showed a stronger response defensively while also finding more opportunities to possess the ball and play into the attacking third.
"I think the girls responded really well," said Western Illinois head coach Ross Henderson. "I'm just conceding one goal is dramatically better than five, for sure. We were competitive. I think the biggest piece we wanted to address was being a bit brave on the ball. We were able to possess and create good opportunities into the final third today, and I think that helps us release a bit of pressure."
Green Bay continued to apply pressure after taking the lead, but Caron made several key stops to prevent the Phoenix from extending their advantage. She recorded saves on attempts from Rebecca Stoeckmann, Ava Nielsen, Ryann Hafenbrak and Alyssa Flood during the second half.
"Second half, it was slightly different," Henderson said. "They were putting a lot of pressure on us, which was tough. But we were better with the ball. We were physical, our shape was good. Of course, conceding one is a lot better than conceding five."
Green Bay finished the afternoon with 22 shots, including 13 on goal, while Western Illinois recorded four shots with two on target. Scott made two saves for the Phoenix.
The Leathernecks continued to push for an equalizer late, but Green Bay's defense held firm to secure the 1-0 victory.
Western Illinois returns to action Wednesday at 5 PM vs. Drake on the road.
