team tallied a season-high .387 attack percentage in a 3-0 (26-16,
25-12, 25-18) win over Chicago State in the 2010 home opener Tuesday night at Western Hall.
Every
player on Western Illinois' roster saw action as the Fighting Leathernecks (4-5,
1-1 Summit League) improved to 6-3 in home openers under ninth-year
head coach Kym McKay. Western has now won 11 straight matches over
Chicago State and leads the all-time series between the two programs
29-4.
"We are thrilled to win the home opener in front of our
fans," McKay said. "Our offense executed extremely well tonight and it was nice to get
everybody in the game. The crowd was very supportive throughout the
match and we are excited about playing IPFW and Oakland in front of our
fans this weekend."
In the first set, Stittleburg and junior
Allison Gilbert combined for 13 kills to help the Leathernecks record a
season-high .552 attack percentage in a 26-16 victory. Junior Alyssa
Holum took over for Smith at setter in the second set and the Western
offensive attack did not miss a beat as the Leathernecks hit .440 and
collected a 25-12 win. In the final set, Western held the visiting
Cougars to a .067 attack percentage and fought off a late Chicago State
rally to capture the third set 25-18.
Offensively, Gilbert had 10
kills with a .438 attack percentage and sophomore Katie Hosteng added
nine kills. In her second appearance of the season, Holum recorded her
first career kill as a Leatherneck and finished with 11 assists.
Bridget
Murphy had a team-high eight digs and junior Cait Egan collected three
service aces. Western Illinois held a 42-22 advantage in kills and
recorded six aces on the night.
The Leathernecks will be back
