Day one of Summit League Championships in the books

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Western Illinois track and field team had five personal bests and five top-10 finishes in day one of the Summit League Championships Thursday.

Junior Tyler Buckles improved his time to the sixth-best time in Western Illinois history as he took 10th place in the 10,000-meter run. Buckles finished with a personal-best time of 31:38.08 to kick off day one of the championships.

Following Buckles' lead with a top-10 finish was sophomore Paul Hames in the hammer throw. Hames' career-best distance of 166-10 (50.85m) placed him seventh. Sophomore teammate Jason Crisman took 11th place in the same event with a distance of 157-09 (48.08m). Tyler Lippert added a career-best distance of 152-11 (46.62m) in the same event.

Also in the throwing events, junior Jesse Bernhardt had a career-best finish in the javelin with a distance of 175-03 (53.43m). Bernhardt's distance allowed him fifth place of 18 competitors in the event.

Junior Jessica Ortega landed eighth place in the hammer throw as she reached a distance of 154-07 (47.11m). Behind Ortega, sophomore Lizzy Jones took ninth place with a distance of 154-07 (47.11m). Improving to a career-best distance of 142-04 (43.38m), freshman Jenna Verity took home 13th place in the hammer.

Day two of the Summit League Track and Field Championships will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, May 14 in Toledo, Ohio.
