MACOMB, Ill.- Lauren Furgala (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) was named the Western Illinois Scholar-Athlete of the Week based on her performances on the field and in the classroom.
Furgala led the Fighting Leathernecks (7-3) to a 4-1 record this weekend at the Phyliss Rafter Memorial with wins over Alabama State, Ball State, Mercer and Tennessee Tech and was named to the all-tournament team for her outstanding play.
The senior captain recorded a .625 batting average over the weekend with 10 hits, five runs, three RBI and five doubles. She also recorded a stolen base and didn't commit a single error throughout the tournament. On the year, she is leading the team with a .500 batting average with 16 hits, six runs and RBI.
The biology major also gets the job done in the classroom, boasting 3.7 cumulative grade point average.
The Leathernecks will play in the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Ill., on March 6-7. Western will face Southern Illinois and SIU-Edwardsville on March 6 and play Kansas and UIC on March 7.
