MACOMB, Ill. — Senior men's basketball player Quenton Kirby has been named the Western Illinois Scholar Athlete of the Week based on his performances on the court and in the classroom.
The psychology major holds a 3.11 cumulative grade point average and started the last two games, adding to his 27 career starts at Western Illinois. At Oral Roberts, Kirby recorded his eighth game in double figures this season, as one of four Leathernecks in double digits, with 11 points. The win over the Golden Eagles was the first in the Mabee Center since Feb. 15, 2001.
Two nights later, the Weimar, Texas native co-led in rebounding (9) at Centenary, for his fourth game this season as a top rebounder. He contributed eight points and a steal in the Leathernecks' win over the Gents. The back-to-back conference road wins on the same trip was the first time since 1997-98, when the Leathernecks won at Chicago State and Northeastern Illinois. The three consecutive road wins in conference play is the first time since the 1996-97 season, when they won five consecutive games against Troy State, Chicago State, Northeastern Illinois, Valpo and Youngstown State.
Kirby and the Leathernecks play host to Southern Utah for a 7 p.m. tip, Thursday, Feb. 18 before facing UMKC at 7 p.m., Saturday, in Western Hall.
