MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois closed out its regular season on Saturday with a split at SIUE in Edwardsville, falling 5-0 in the opener before responding with an 8-0 shutout win in the regular season finale.Â
SIUE set the tone in the first game, breaking through in the third inning with three runs highlighted by an RBI double from Aidyn Barrera and a two-run single from Betsy Woodward. The Cougars added runs in the fourth and sixth, including a solo home run from Raegan Duncan, while holding Western Illinois to five hits in a 5-0 result.
Ruby Tarr and Alijah Williams each collected two hits to lead the Leathernecks offensively, but Western Illinois was unable to plate any runs in the opener.Â
Western Illinois answered in strong fashion in the second game, erupting for five runs in the third inning and never trailing. Kam Utendorf delivered an RBI single in the frame, Maria Luna added a run-scoring groundout, and the Leathernecks capitalized on SIUE errors to take control in the third.
Ruby Tarr provided the big swing of the day with a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Western Illinois added insurance in the seventh on RBI singles from Tarr and Sophia Sanchez to seal the 8-0 victory.
Lillie Wools was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just six hits.
The Leathernecks finished the regular season 14-31 overall and 9-17 in Ohio Valley Conference play, earning the No. 8 seed in the OVC Tournament. Western Illinois will open postseason play against No. 5 seed Southeast Missouri on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Peoria.
