MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois Swimming and Diving team competed in the TYR/CollegeSwimming.com Invite in Kenosha, Wis. hosted by Carthage College. The women finished fourth out of seven teams with a team score of 477.5 and the men's squad also finished fourth out six teams with a score of 469.
Carthage College took home both the women and men's team titles for their home event.
"Our teams did exactly what I was hoping to see. They were given a little more rest than almost any other meet we will have this season and they all swam fast," said head coach Greg Naumann.
"The hardest thing at a meet like this is to come back and swim stronger at night. We did struggle a little with this, but the meet format is also more than what we would see at conference in February."
"Some of the standout swims came from Jamie Grau, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Alayna Colley, Brandon Wilkinson, Phil Kurz and Jeff Davis. They all stepped up in all of their events."
"We did have a rough second session on Friday night, but they came back strong on Saturday morning and evening. After this meet, everyone is sitting faster at this time of the year than they were last year. This is a good sign for things to come at conference. We still have some injuries that we are trying to get through, but those individuals should be ready to go in the next couple of weeks."
The Leathernecks will make their 2010-11 season home debut on Dec. 18 when they play host to Illinois-Chicago.
