FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Western Illinois men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches and wrapped up regular season play with a 7-0 win over South Dakota State at the Swinney Park Tennis Center.
Even though the Leathernecks (9-15, 4-2 Summit League) were playing doubles for the first time in three matches at the league cluster, they showed no rust in taking all three doubles matches and earning the doubles point. Senior Zach Frisch and junior James McGuire picked up the win at No. 2 doubles, beating the Jackrabbits' team of Justin Pyle and Evan Sims, 8-3. The senior duo of Neil Lesinski and Sean Ragee-Nelson won at No. 1 doubles after defeating South Dakota State's top team of Corey Paluch and Michael Engdahl, 8-4.
In singles action, Ragee-Nelson extended his singles winning streak to eight matches with a straight-set victory over Pyle, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Francisco Ortiz made the quickest work of his opponent, defeating Engdahl, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot. Frisch nearly matched that effort by beating Paluch in the top singles match, 6-2, 6-0.
Other singles winners for Western were Lesinski (No. 3, 6-4, 6-4), freshman Mandela Shepard (No. 5, 6-0, 6-3) and McGuire (No. 6, 6-3, 6-1).
The Leathernecks enter the Summit League championship as the No. 3 seed and square off against No. 2 UMKC. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, April 24, in Fort Wayne.
