ROCHESTER, Mich.- After playing to a 0-0 tie in the first half, the Western Illinois women's soccer team gave up four goals in 32 minutes of play to lose 4-0 against Oakland.
"Despite the score we actually played good soccer," said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "We had some opportunities to score in the first half and we missed out. They're well coached and I'm sure they were relieved to be scoreless at half. They really took the momentum in the second half."
In the first half of play, the Westerwinds (5-7-2, 1-3-0 Summit League) had opportunities to score, including a play where the ball found the back of the net but was called back due to a penalty. Western also had a failed penalty kick attempt and a miss on an open net.
The Golden Grizzlies (5-9-2, 4-1-0 Summit League) got on the board early in the second half against the Westerwinds in the 54th minutes. Meghan Hartwig and Sarah Lynch connected for a give-and-go for Hartwig's second goal of the season.
In the 65th minute of the game, Jessica Boyle found teammate Amy Trandell in the box who hit a one-touch shot passed Western's sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Tyk. It was Trandell's third goal of the season.
Just ten minutes later, Kristi Smith scored her first goal of the season to put the score at 3-0. Smith unloaded a shot from just outside of the box and was able to beat Tyk to find the back of the net.
Hartwig scored her second goal of the game ad her third of the season in the 86th minute of the game to finish the scoring for Oakland. Hartwig found herself one-on-one with the Tyk and beat her to make the score 4-0.
"We got down so we started sending numbers up front," Guinn stated. "We were really thin on defense because of that and they took advantage of that."
Western heads to IUPUI for another Summit League match Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium.
