Westerwinds receive first loss of the season

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Western Illinois women's soccer team received its first loss of the season after dropping a 3-0 decision to Evansville at Black Beauty Field.

The Purple Aces (3-1-0) got on the during the second minute of the game when Danielle Brand took a pass from Kayla Lambert and bounced her shot off a Westerwinds defender from 10 yards out to give Evansville a 1-0 lead. The Purple Aces would add two more goals throughout the game for the win.

"I thought giving up a goal so early wasn't a great a great way to start off," said head coach Tony Guinn. "It put us in a very early hole."

The three goals were more than enough as Evansville's freshmen keeper Theresea Bagby had three saves in the shutout.

It was a game of missed opportunities for Western Illinois (2-1-0) as they out shot the Purple Aces 12 to eight. Junior Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) contributed five shots, including three shots on goal.

"We just didn't do a very good job of taking advantage of the opportunities that we got," stated Guinn. "They scored three very nice goals on eight shots and did take advantages of their chances. Having possession of the ball is a great thing in soccer, but if you don't score goals then you can't win the game."

"Evansville played very well," said Guinn. "They are a very solid team and they'll have a very good year."

The Westerwinds continue on their two-game road trip as they head to DeKalb, Ill., to take on the Northern Illinois at Huskie Soccer Field Sunday, September 9, at 1 p.m.

Notes: Senior Robyn Ruypers (Petrolia, Ontario/Lambton Central Collegiate) remains tied for first on the school's all-time career goals list. She also stays three points shy of tying the school's record for points in a career.
