FORT WAYNE, Ind.- Junior
Katelyn Wisner scored back-to-back goals to lead the Western Illinois women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over IPFW at Hefner Soccer Complex.
"I always knew that Katelyn (Wisner) could be a real presence on the field," said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "She's a hard worker and can finish very well, but she's just been unlucky this year with hitting the crossbar and posts so much. It was nice to see her get two goals tonight."
The Westerwinds (8-1-1, 3-0-0 Summit League) once again got on the board early when senior
Bess Rapp (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) headed in fellow senior
Misako Inaba's (Kashiwa, Japan/Yachiyoshoin) corner kick in the third minute of the game. Rapp's fourth goal of the season gave Western Illinois a 1-0 lead. It was the third time this season that the Westerwinds have scored inside the first five minutes.
Wisner (Lenexa, Kan./Olathe East) gave the Westerwinds a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute when she unloaded a shot past IPFW (0-9-0, 0-1-0 Summit League) keeper Malinda Holmer from center of the field, eight yards out.
Wisner's second goal of the game came in the 41st minute of the game when she picked up a loose ball three feet away from the goal and found the back of the net. Wisner's third and fourth goal of the season gave the Westerwinds a 3-0 lead.
Western Illinois' defense had their fourth shutout of the season only allowing the Mastodons nine shots in the game. Sophomore
Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) and senior
Julie Remes (Arden Hills, Minn./Totino Grace) split a majority of the time in net and combined for five saves.
"Our defense is very strong," stated Guinn. "They keep the other team's shot on goal percentage very low which always helps to win games."
The Westerwinds travel to Springfield, Mo., to play Missouri State Sunday October 7 at 1 p.m.
