IOWA CITY, Iowa.- The Western Illinois women's soccer team played the University of Iowa to a 0-0 draw on Saturday in their final exhibition game at the Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City, Iowa. The two teams played a total of 110 minutes of soccer.
"It was a lot of soccer," said head coach Tony Guinn. "It was a very hard fought game and our girls really dug and grinded the entire game. I'm really happy with our all around effort. It's a really good feeling to play this well on the road against a Big Ten (Conference) team. The girls not only represented Western Illinois very well, but The Summit League as well."
The stats for both teams were as even as the score of the game. Western Illinois took 12 shots to Iowa's 11 and both keepers had four saves. The stat that stood out during the game was the Westerwinds nine corner kicks to Iowa's one.
"Having that many more corner kicks is a real positive," stated Guinn. "We we're on the attack a lot, we just couldn't capitalize off those opportunities."
Westerwinds relied on senior keeper
Julie Remes for all 110 minutes on Saturday. She recorded four saves during the shutout.
Junior
Ashley Hoch took four shots and senior
Kelly Warner added three, including two shots on goal.
The Westerwinds will open up their regular season against Southern Indiana on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Ill.
