ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team fell during this weekends road trip. The Westerwinds fell, 5-2, to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Saturday, Mar. 3, at the Highlander Elite, in Milwaukee, Wis., and lost to the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, Sunday, Mar. 4, 6-1, at the Clocktower Racquet Club in Rockford, Ill.
Freshman Courtney Brooks captured the Westerwinds lone singles win over the UW-Milwaukee's junior Traci Litscher, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, at the No. 5 spot. Brooks and teammate senior Jessica Drake defeated Litscher and senior Shayna Illingworth, 9-7, at No. 3 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Kim Lennartsson and freshman Yana Meinert took the win over the Panther's freshmen Kari Kastenholz and Ashley Schoneman, 8-5.
"It was a strange weekend," stated Western Illinois head tennis coach Michael Hunt. "We played great doubles and poor singles on Saturday and followed it up with great singles and poor doubles on Sunday. It's nice to know we have those levels in us. We're pretty banged up right now, and looking forward to some time to rest and recuperate."
In singles play, Lennartsson defeated Huskie sophomore Lilian Asuaje, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. Falling in a tie-breaker match, Meinert dropped the No. 3 spot, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, to NIU's sophomore Nao Umemura. In doubles play, Drake and Brooks fell to junior Dora Delgadillo and sophomore Jenny Edner, 8-3, at No. 3.
The Westerwinds resume competition, Friday, Mar. 23, for the first outdoor home match of the season against Quincy, at 9 a.m.
