MACOMB, Ill. – Making back-to-back trips to the NCAA Zones diving competition, sophomore divers
Eric Campbell and
Anthony Holzhauer will be representing Western Illinois in Ann Arbor, Mich., March 2-4.
"Our divers are pumped up for this competition," said diving coach
Kaitlin Schneider. "They really want to make a statement for Western Illinois."
Both divers qualified for the 84th Annual NCAA Zones with a record-breaking score of 345.90 in different events. At the final home meet of the 2006-07 season against Illinois-Chicago Campbell broke the previous record for the 3-meter event and Holzhauer qualified in the 1-meter event at Saint Louis, Jan. 13.
In their first trip to zones, Campbell finished the preliminary rounds for the 1-meter and platform events in the top-18, good enough to advance to the final rounds. He scored 458.45 points in the 1-meter finals event for 17th place and landed 15th place in the platform event with a score of 446.65. Holzhauer finished the preliminaries in 21st place for the platform event (151.40) and 33rd place for both the 1-meter (206.15) and the 3-meter (211.20) events.
"This year our divers feel more confident because they know what to expect," said Schneider. "They have been practicing all year with this competition in mind and their main goal is to final, which will be tough when facing some of the top divers in the nation."
Hosted by the University of Michigan, this year the Leatherneck divers will face 39 other individuals representing diving teams from 17 other schools including Illinois-Chicago, Iowa, Ohio State, IUPUI, Ball State and Wisconsin-Green Bay, teams they have faced in the 2006-07 season.
Day one of the three-day competition will begin Friday, Mar. 2 at the Canham Natatorium.
