MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois University's Head Men's Soccer Coach
Dr. Eric Johnson along with assistant coach Armen Tonianse, recognized the 2006 Leatherneck soccer team for their accomplishments during Western's third run of a Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Title and its first regular season title under Johnson.
“This is the best team that I have has since I have been at Western,” said Johnson. “We have a great group of young men and there are eight seniors that will be missed.”
Nick Bohnenkamp, Elton Fernandes, Adam Johnson, Kosuke Kimura, Jeff Wakeland, Matt Wieclaw, Gerrit Yank and Daniel Zwerling were all recognized for their contributions as seniors and were presented with a personal framed action picture for their achievements.
This senior class combined for a four-year record of 43-33-7 and a Mid-Con record of 15-6-3. They amassed a record of 21-5-3 at home.
Wieclaw was named the Mid-Con Offensive Player of the Year and the conference tournament MVP. Wieclaw was also named the team MVP. Kimura was drafted by the Colorado Rapids of the MLS and is currently in training.
Others recognized were: JJ Stefanic, who received the team's Most Improved Player award, and Martin Browne and
Stephen Paterson were named the team's Newcomers of the Year after each of their stellar years.
The team was also presented with jackets that featured the NCAA logo with 2004-06 insignia on the sleeves. Letterjackets were also presented to those who lettered during the 2006 season.
“This was such a memorable season and there are so many memories that these guys will take with them wherever they go,” said Johnson. “We wish them the best of luck.”
