Macomb, IL. - Western Illinois Men's Soccer gets its first loss in the Ohio Valley Conference contest of the season, 0-2, against Lindenwood University at Hunter Stadium this Sunday afternoon.
The Leathernecks followed their last match performance and came out of the gates aggressively on offense. Senior Forward Liam Gainey kicked off the attack with the first shot by the Leathernecks at the 19-minute mark of the first half. Sophomore Defender/Middle Fielder Benjamin Graham followed with the second shot of the afternoon at the 27-minute mark. The Leathernecks ended the first half with a shot by Junior Forward Diego Porras at the 44-minute mark. Ending the first half in a 0-0 score to the number one shooting team in the OVC conference.
Outshooting the Leathernecks 6-3 in the first half, the Lions came out in the second half looking to score. Graduate Student Forward Sebastia Cerda Tous scored the Lions' first goal of the game at the 49-minute mark of the second half. Giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Leathernecks responded to the early second-half goal with two shots in the following ten minutes by Sophomore Forward/Middle Fielder Bruce Harris at the 54-minute mark and Senior Middle Fielder Nathan Bessinger at the 58-minute mark of the match. Playing tough, the Leathernecks committed two back-to-back fouls that led to the Lions getting a penalty kick at the 71-minute mark of the match. The Leathernecks then gave up their second goal of the game to Graduate Student Midfielder Gavin Csiszar. Losing the game 0-2 to the undefeated Lindenwood Lions( 10-0-1).
Western Illinois ( 3-8-1) continues its three-game road trip this Thursday against the University of Incarnate Word.
