SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Junior
Ashley Hoch scored the game-winning goal and sophomore
Meghan Tyk had five saves as the Western Illinois women's soccer team shutout Missouri State 1-0 at Plaster Field.
"It was a very good defensive game, stated Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "They are more physical, stronger, and bigger than we are. They were a good defensive team with a good goalkeeper. It only takes one good shot to make the difference and today we were able to make that difference."
In the 12th minute of the game, Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) received a cross from senior defender
Liz Remes (Arden Hills, Minn./Totino Grace) and unloaded a shot into the left corner. Hoch's third goal and second game-winning goal of the year gave the Westerwinds (9-1-1) a 1-0 lead.
"We pushed our defenders up a little bit more today," said Guinn. "It really caused some problems because they were unmarked. We took advantage of that when Liz made a great pass to Ashley for a goal."
One goal would be all the Westerwinds would need as Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) made five saves in the shutout. The defense was strong the entire game, only allowing the Bears (4-8-1) seven shots and just five on goal.
"Missouri State really had the better play in the second half," stated Guinn. "We had to defend the entire time. They had the better possession and the better shots in the second half and we stayed tough and held on for the win."
Sunday's shutout of the Bears gives Tyk three on the season and six wins overall. She lowered her season goals allowed average to 0.57.
The game was delayed an hour and a half due to travel issues.
"Missouri State is the classiest school that we've played this year as far as employees and coaching staff," said Guinn. "They were very gracious with delaying the game that long. They were very classy with making the game run smoothly after that long of a delay."
"This win is a real testament to the toughness and character of this team," stated Guinn. "To get up at four in the morning and ten hours later win a soccer game against a tough team at their place just shows what these girls are made of."
The Westerwinds will host Summit League member South Dakota State Thursday, October 11,at 4 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
