Western drops second straight conference game

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Ashley Hoch took three shots with two on goal in a 1-0 loss by the Western Illinois women's soccer team to Southern Utah. This is the second straight loss in Mid-Con play for the Westerwinds.

The Thunderbirds' Kimly Anderson scored the only goal in the 63rd minute to give Southern Utah its second win in conference play.

While the temperature said 72 degrees, Western still had to battle elements beyond its control. With the altitude above 6,000 feet, it was a difficult evening for breathing for the Westerwinds.

"Our ladies were just not used to being that high in altitude," said Western head coach, Kevin Sherry. "There was nothing we could do. We would go hard for about 10 minutes and then we would just crash. We couldn't breathe. We had to used everyone we had on our bench."

Samantha Clark was challenged with more shots on goal than she has all year. The Thunderbirds placed 10 shots on goal and took 17 total shots. Clark came up with nine saves.

Western took 13 shots with five on goal.

" I am really surprised we didn't give up more than one goal," said Sherry. "We played our hearts out for as long as we could. We just have to know that every other year, that when we go out there, it's going to be one of the toughest games of the year. The only way that you can prepare for playing in this altitude is stay here for a couple of weeks."

The Westerwinds (7-5-0, 0-2-0) will play again Saturday at 4 p.m. (CDT) against Weber State.
