Ashley Hoch took seven shots for Western Illinois in a 1-0 overtime loss to Valparaiso, Friday, at MacKenzie Alumni Field in the Mid-Continent Conference opener.?Once again we were the better team and we played soccer the way it should be played,? said Kevin Sherry, head women?s soccer coach at Western. ?We just didn?t get the just rewards.?Valpo?s Brittany Derksen scored her first goal of the year on a golden-goal in the first period of overtime at the 94:12 mark. She got a cross from Lori Johnson and dumped the ball past the diving Sam Clark for the win.
Misako Inaba had a chance to give the Westerwinds a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when she ricocheted a ball off the cross bar from 25 yards out.
Kim Schuneman saved Western from going down 0-1 when she cleared a ball from the box after it landed about 10 feet from the goal early in the second half.?I really didn?t think they (Valparaiso) pressured our goal that much,? said Sherry. ?We came up with some good defensive plays, but we had the better goal scoring opportunities.?
Jacquelyn Trickey also had chance to take the lead when she missed wide on a shot in the 68th minute.?We?re talking one yard of a difference on the missed goals,? said Sherry. ?We?re just not having the luck. Caitlin Barrett was ejected upon receiving a red card. Barrett got tangled up with the Crusaders? Ani Michl and an altercation ensued. Michl was given a yellow card.Seven cards were handed out with Valparaiso getting four yellows and Western receiving two yellows plus the one red card.?The difference to the game was that Valparaiso was so overly physical,? said Sherry.It was shortly after the red when Derksen scored the game-winning goal.Clark did pick up five saves in the loss.The Westerwinds outshot Valparaiso 14-11, but put fewer shots on goal with four compared to the Crusaders? six.Western will start its six-game road trip with the first stop in Terre Haute, Ind., where they will play Indiana State University at 1 p.m. (EST).
