Westerwinds edged by Bradley in five

PEORIA, Ill. - Amy Sauerwein tallied her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs, as Western Illinois? volleyball team fell 3-2 (31-29, 26-30, 30-28, 32-30, 8-15) to Bradley in the opening match of the Radisson Hotels Bradley Invitational.Up two games to one, WIU, 0-4, catapulted to a 20-11 lead, propulsed by a 6-0 run with freshman Elise Crnjak at the serve. Bradley, now 2-2, bravely fought back, going on a 12-3 run to capture the lead, the momentum, and eventually the game.?I give a lot of credit to Bradley, We had them down in game four,? head coach Kym McKay said. ?They stayed aggressive, and it paid off for them.?In the deciding set, Kelly Niemeyer earned three kills and a block assist, leading the Braves to a 15-8 victory. Bradley turned out four kills to open the series, and finished the match with a 5-1 run.It took an extra point to get there, but Western won its first game of the 2006 season 31-29 over the Braves. Ashley Baker blazed in the opening set, notching five kills in 10 tries. The Westerwind defense helped the cause with three team blocks. Freshman Erin frick highlighted the defensive play at the net, with two block assists, including the block which scored the game-clinching point.Western was unable to capture a lead in the second game, partially due to a .368 team hitting percentage by the Braves. Bradley, led by a six kill effort from Amber DeBroux, took the game 30-26.Western took the 2-1 advantage after a contested third game, which included nine ties and five lead changes after the 19-20 mark. Despite going down 0-4 early, Western rallied to knot things up 14-14, and take a lead at 21-20. Neither team scored more than two points in a row down the stretch, but Western utlized a Michelle Donnelly kill to take a 29-28 lead, and captured the game on a Bradley ball-handling error.Ashley Baker had eight kills and .352 hitting percentage, while freshman Erin Frick led the team in total blocks with a season/career high eight and scored seven kills. Elise Crnjak served four aces, another career-high.?It was a great performance by Harrison and Donnelly,? McKay said. ?Michelle (Donnelly) went in on the left side where she has never played before and did fantastic.?Donnelly tallied a six kills and seven blocks, both career highs. Harrison, who?s sister Jenna plays for Bradley, earned the first six kills of her collegiate career in the match while hitting at a .333 clip.?Emily (Harrison) played smart and hustled, and made a lot of great plays because of that,? Mckay said.Western had 13 total blocks and 55 kills as a team, both season-highs. The Westerwinds continue play at the Radisson Invitational Saturday, first battling Cincinnati at 11 a.m., then taking on Austin Peay State at 5 p.m.
