Swimming & Diving Takes Third Place at Mid-Con Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Both Western Illinois swimming and diving squads placed third at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships which concluded Saturday in Indianapolis. The men finished with 433.50 points, while the women had 548 points during the three-day competition.

Freshmen Eric Campbell was named Diver of the Year, while fellow freshman Ryan Wichman was named Newcomer of the Year on the men's side. 

Campbell was named Diver of the Y ear after taking first place in both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions. Saturday, Campbell broke the school record in the 3-meter dive with 322.80 points, breaking his previous mark set earlier in the year. Freshman diver Anthony Holzhauer took fourth in the same competition with 284.55 points, a personal best.

Wichman took home the Newcomer of the Year award after earning two first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. His 1,650 free time on Saturday of 16:04.99 places him fourth on the Leatherneck all-time list. Sophomore Jason Meinhardt took third place in t he same competition with a personal best time of 16:28.47.

Freshman Gregory Thede placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.40, while junior Drew Page took fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a personal best time of 1:56.20. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Wichman, Meinhardt and seniors Mark DuBois and Brent Eames placed fourth in 3:11.41.

Junior Madeha Farrar took home third place Saturday in the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.33, while classmate Erin Hall placed fourth in the 200 back with a personal best time of 2:09.67. In the 1,650 free, freshman Amber Piercy had a personal best time of 17:53.18, which set a new personal best. Freshman Amanda Smith recorded Western's fourth fastest time in school history in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of :53.72.

The 400 free relay team placed second with the third fastest time in school history at 3:36.62. The team consisted of Smith, Piercy, junior Lindsay Mathis and sophomore Jennifer Madgiak. Sophomore diver Alexis Ralph place fourth in the 1-meter dive with 203.80 points, while freshman Stephanie Roley was right behind her with 143.15 points in fifth place.

The Western Illinois swimming and diving squads finished out the regular season each with third-place finishes at the Mid-Con Championships.
