Day Two at Mid-Con Swimming & Diving Championships Complete

INDIANAPOLIS ? After the second day of the Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Western Illinois swimming and diving squads are in third and fourth place. The women fell one spot to third with 353 points, while the men gained two spots to fourth with 253 points.

In the men's competition, freshman divers Eric Campbell and Anthony Holzhauer placed first and second respectively in the 1-meter dive. Campbell took first with 311.40 points, which is second all time. Holzhauer placed second with a personal best 309.70 points.

Freshman Gregory Thede took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of :59.14, while sophomore Jason Meinhardt took fifth in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:17.54 in the prelims. The team of Meinhardt, seniors Mark DuBois and Brent Eames and freshman Ryan Wichman took fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:07.57.

On the women's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Madeha Farrar and Lindsay Mathis, sophomore Jennifer Madgiak and freshman Amanda Smith broke the school record. Their time of 1:48.03 took second place in the competition and broke the school record set in 2002 by more than one second.

The 800 free relay team of Madgiak, Smith, junior Erin Hall and freshman Amber Piercy took second with a time of 7:54.45. That time was good enough for third on the Western Illinois all-time list. Farrar finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.06.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Hall had a prelim time of 1:00.18, which was a personal best and took third in the finals. In the same event, Madgiak place fourth with a personal best time of 1:01.06. Mathis had a prelim time of :59.95 in the 100-yard butterfly and took fifth in the event, while Piercy recorded a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle with a fifth place time of 1:57.60.

The Western Illinois swimming and diving squads will wrap up the season Saturday, in the final day of the Mid-Con Championships in Indianapolis.
