Swimming and Diving Falls In Triangular Meet

CHICAGO - The Western Illinois University swimming and diving squads both fell in a triangular meet held at the UIC Natatorium in Chicago. The men fell to Illinois-Chicago 147-88 and to Saint Louis 145-88. The women lost to Illinois-Chicago by the score of 159-74 and to Saint Louis 170-65.On the men?s side, the Leathernecks came away with one first-place finish and six second-place finishes. Freshman Ryan Wichman (Bowling Green, Ohio) took the lone first place victory for Western in the 1650-yard freestyle event with a time of 16:58.94. Right behind him in second place was sophomore Jason Meinhardt (Bettendort, Iowa) with a time of 17:07.87.In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Nick Carroll (Northbrook, Ill.) finished second with a season best time of 1:50.81. Senior Mark DuBois (South Bend, Ind.) took second in the 500-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in a career best time of 4:56.14. Senior Dennis Norton (Algonquin, Ill.) had a season best time of 2:19.68 in the 200-yard breaststroke.Freshman Eric Campbell (Glenview, Ill.) had a season best score of 308.80 in the 1-meter diving competition, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Wichman, Carroll, and junior Matt Clavey (Northbrook, Ill.) and sophomore Tony Gallagher (Munster, Ind.) placed second with a time of 3:26.76.On the women?s side of the competition, freshman Amber Piercy (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had a first-place finish in the 1650 free with a season best time of 17:57.65. In the 200-yard individual medley, junior Madeha Farrar (Thorton, Ill.) hit the wall in a season best time of 2:16.22 for second place.The Western Illinois swimming and diving teams will take a week off and will next be in action at the IUPUI Invitation on Dec. 2-3 in Indianapolis.
