Western Illinois freshman track and field athlete Khalyia Lawson has been named WIU’s Hampton Inn ‘Scholar Athlete of the Week’ after helping Western to a second-place finish at the Knox College Outdoor Open this past weekend.
 
Competing in the women’s triple jump, Lawson posted a mark of 34’ 11 ¾“ to finish in second place. Lawson, a native of Decatur, Illinois later posted a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 16’ 3”.  Western finished the meet with 127 points to earn second-place overall.
 
Lawson also excels in the classroom as she holds a 3.98 GPA while majoring in philosophy.
