Sophomore running back Steve McShane was chosen the Hampton Inn Scholar-Athlete of the Week, helping the Leatherneck Football team to a season-opening win at in-state rival Eastern Illinois. McShane's career-day highlighted the 38-21 victory.
He accomplished a feat not done in eight years, rushing for more than 200 yards in a contest. His career-best 207 yards on 28 attempts, along with his 56 receiving yards, were the most all-purpose yards in the NCAA Division I FCS last weekend. McShane rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to open the scoring and closed the final margin following a 70-yard scoring run - the longest run by a Leatherneck in 16 years.
For his efforts, he was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference 'Co-Offensive Player of the Week', and Honorable Mention National 'Player of the Week' by STATS and the College Football Performance Awards.
He leads the nation with his 263 all-purpose yards, and ranks second in rushing yards per game. His two TDs were the first of his career.
McShane owns a 3.01 GPA majoring in Exercise Science.
