MACOMB, Ill.- Western Illinois exploded offensively Tuesday night, rolling past Indiana State 13-3 in Terre Haute behind a 14-hit performance and a dominant effort from the bullpen.
The Leathernecks jumped on the board early in the second inning when Kamryn Link launched a solo home run to right field. WIU added two more runs in the frame after an Indiana State throwing error and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Krayton Morse to take a 3-0 lead.
Western Illinois extended the advantage in the fourth inning, capitalizing on wild pitches and a passed ball to push the lead to 5-0. Indiana State broke through in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, but the Leathernecks answered with their biggest inning of the night in the sixth.
WIU plated six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Link, an RBI double from Isaiah Monge and a two-run double by Josh McClintock. The outburst stretched the lead to 11-1 and put the game out of reach.
Link led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Monge finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two doubles. McClintock also collected three hits and drove in two runs, while Morse added two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, William Humphrey earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. The Leatherneck pitching staff combined to hold Indiana State to six hits while striking out seven.
Western Illinois improved to 17-30 on the season with the victory, and will now travel to Morehead to face the Morehead State Eagles.
