MACOMB,Ill.- The Western Illinois University women's basketball team battled through four quarters on the road Thursday night but ultimately fell 63–53 to Morehead State at Johnson Arena. The loss moves the Leathernecks to 15–3 overall and 7–2 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Western Illinois kept the contest tight throughout, never allowing the Eagles to pull away early and responding with key runs to stay within reach. After trailing by three at halftime, the Leathernecks came out strong in the third quarter, shooting 72.7 percent from the field and scoring 20 points to cut the deficit to just three heading into the final period.
Senior Addi Brownfield led WIU with a strong all-around performance, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists while knocking down three three-pointers. Mallory Shetley added 15 points and six rebounds, scoring consistently in the paint, while Mia Nicastro chipped in 12 points and six boards.
The Leathernecks tied the game at 30 midway through the third quarter and later pulled within two points with just over seven minutes remaining in the fourth following back-to-back baskets from Nicastro. However, Morehead State capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch, converting 11-of-12 attempts in the final quarter to create separation.
Western Illinois shot 40.8 percent from the floor and held the Eagles to 33.3 percent shooting overall, but Morehead State's advantage at the line proved to be the difference, finishing 16-of-18 from the stripe. WIU totaled 32 rebounds and forced nine turnovers while committing 15 of its own.
The Leathernecks will continue OVC play as they return to action this weekend, looking to bounce back and maintain their position near the top of the conference standings.
