BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Western Illinois pole vault squad made a statement at the Normal Invite, delivering standout performances that shook up the program's record books and secured multiple podium finishes.
Leading the charge was Arnie Grunert, who was all business on the runway. Grunert not only claimed first place but also shattered his own school record with a vault of 5.53m. His vault ranks third nationally in the NCAA this season.
On the women's side, Dana Surwillo soared to first place with a vault of 3.75m, tying for third all-time in WIU history. Right behind her was Emma Ponx, whose 3.60m clearance earned her second place on the day. Colleen Johnson and Angel Stanley also contributed strong performances, finishing seventh and eighth respectively with matching vaults of 3.30m.
The Leathernecks head to the University of Kansas for the Kansas Relays, beginning Thursday, April 17.
